The School Speech Competition

We held our school speech competition today in the hall. There was an unusual silence as we listened to 12 children present their speeches from 4 Senior classrooms. The topics ranged from Slang, Convincing your Parents to buy you things, Disabilities, Why School should start at 8am and Football.
We were so excitied when Bernadette from our class came 1st and Leah came 3rd. Well done to you both

So who was last in the castle?

Yes- the castle has gone and Anne with her companions were the lucky last in the castle. She had been following our news and was keen to see how we had made it. As she was coming to Auckland from Christchurch she decided to call in and was lucky as she made it just in time.
Anne spent time with a group of us and Mrs Bon in term 1 teaching us how to create and develop a Blog site. We are very grateful to her as now it is almost a daily part of our lives. Enjoy what we record as it will keep you up to date with what we are doing.
Thank you Anne.

School Show Room 1 in Oceania

The School show was such a success and we are really pleased with our dance Oceania.
We enjoyed creating our own ideas around a sea theme. We hand made our own tassles by painting on fabric. We had many parent helpers to paint our faces.

Here we are being painted by Miss Taufalele and Talei and Mrs DSouza.

We were the only class that decided not to smile so we would look angry at being tossed around like seaweed by the Sea Goddess- Olivia Lucas.
We thought the show was so good we couldn't find any improvements needed......What did you think of us?

Creating and Performing with Puppets

Making puppets looks easy but it isn't as you have to not only make your papier mache head you then also need to paint and design the features so that they can be seen by an audience.
Next you then have to sew the costumes-yes actually sew it on a machine. As you can see the boys "loved "
this!
Next we had to write plays. We read lots first to get the ideas for interesting plays.
After we had made scenery we performed these for other classes, that was great fun. This week we are performing for the Juniors. We can't wait!

The tornado

Tornado

The tornado crashed through the town.
Frightning the towns people.
As it laughed all the way through the town,
to see the path of destruction

By Liam Mackinnon
The Castle

The castle cried out loud,
as its cheeks were being cracked,
by battering rams.
The castle angrily spat out arrows back at them.
As the enemies slowly faded away.

The Flame

The flame grew restless,
as the cup trapped it ,
with his see through claws.
The flame couldn't breathe,
gasping for air,
but slowly ,it passed out.

Middle Ages Assessment and Reflection

While we have been studying the Middle Ages we have gathered data on our question. We presented our information to the class and had to answer the deep questions to show our knowldege. These photos show us reflecting on our research to see if we have met the criteria:
* did we answer our question?
* was the whole group involved in the research?
*did we meet the time frame?
*did our presentation have the wow factor!
* did we have fun?

 What do you think?

Sports with Rosmini

Every Tuesday we go down to Rosmini at 9.00 to meet with our sports guides from Rosmini. They are using our sport programme and create activities that use the skills we learn in our own PE lesson at St Joes.
We love meeting up with them and have a lot of fun as we are grouped right across the 4 classes from Room 1 to 4. At the end the Rosmin boys give us feedback on how we went-then it is our turn to tell them what they can do better!

More photos to enjoy...

So who is left to visit us......is it you? We look forward to seeing you soon.

So who has been visiting room 1 lately

Wow it has been so busy as our visitors to Lord Ransom's castle have kept on coming in. We have got a little behind entering these as we have been studying Middle Ages life and the research has taken up most of our school time. We are now in the closing stages of recording our gathered data to answer our question and by Friday our displays of our knowledge will be shared.
The hardest part has been including a Bibliography of our sources-as at first we collected data and then forgot where it had come from.
Using the descriptor on the computer sites has certainly helped us to only open the sites that relate to our topic.
Next week we will be starting the science part of the Middle Ages by looking at the simple machines they used to lift those huge blocks for the Cathedrals-pulleys, levers and wedges.

Parents in the Castle

We have had even more parents coming to have their picture taken inside Lord Ransom's Castle. Amazingly the idea has ballooned and many visitors dropped in this week- even more than last week! Although there is a dungeon we haven't had to use it YET!!!!
As our research continues we are searching relevant information that will answer our questions. How does a castle defend itself from different kinds of attack..?....why were punishments so hard...?....what was the cause and consequence of disease in the Middle Ages ? and many other questions.
When you have a few minutes to spare come and see us in action.

We have still been taking up the challenge for every parent to come in to room 1's castle. So far we have had about 20 parents in castle. We still need 12 more parents to get a full house !!!.

finished castle pictures

We have finished our castle and it looks amazing, we are very proud of ourselves. We have a walkin draw bridge and a dungeon. We have some pictures of our master piece. When we assessed the skills we learnt we linked it to Bloom's Taxonomy- we used foundation skills in remembering  about castles, we understood the perspectives we needed we then applied the knowledge to build the walls. As we worked we used the H.O.T. skills-analysing the type of drawbridge to build, we did lots of debating and arguing of the best ideas, evaluated the finished design and made recommendations, then we created it.
